NaNoWriMo 2011!

"Why are there random bolded sections? And why do I have a feeling I've heard them before?"

Everything in bold in any of these blog posts is a "pop culture reference," which is just a fancy way of saying, "I've watched way too much television/read far too many books in my short life, and I've collected countless quotes and trivial facts, and since I hear recycling is good for the environment, I figure I'll toss them into my daily vernacular and see how many people catch on."

There's no documentation, but I give props to all who can pinpoint the origin of all such bolded remarks. Happy Hunting!

I want you...

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ

I want you to participate in NaNoWriMo.

Yes, I know who I'm talking to. I'm talking to software/electrical/chemical/mechanical engineers. I'm talking to CPAs and CS students. I'm talking to poets and to songwriters. I'm talking to student teachers and to RAs. I'm talking to nursing majors, to bio-chem majors, to grad-school prospectives, and to MFAs. I'm talking to high school students, college students, grandmothers, childrearers, and video-game players. I'm talking to men, to women, to boys, to girls, to everyone in between. I'm talking to you, and I mean you. I may be writing this in general, but my small readership allows me to think of each one of you individually when I say I WANT YOU.

But not only do I want you to do this, you want you to do this, too. You know how challenging it would be, and you say it's crazy. But in the back of your mind and the tips of your fingers is a story you've been thinking of telling. Maybe you hadn't planned on turning it into a novel; maybe you just wanted to tell it to your boyfriend tomorrow. Maybe you just like thinking about it while you're driving to work or when you're playing fetch with your dog. But there's a story in you, and you've thought, probably more than once, about putting it somewhere. Maybe not public, but somewhere.

And that thought is just the beginning. The next step is to realize that you can. Nothing is holding you back. Nothing but the fear of failure. And I can tell you right now, that is my favorite fear to face. It's like you're sitting on a roller coaster at the top of a huge hill...and then you drop. And your stomach flies up into your throat and you feel vaguely sick, but you're loving it anyway.

Because you can.

"I've heard so many people tell me that they aren't going to do NaNoWriMo this year because they don't think they have time to write fifty-thousand words. ... If you only have time to have thirty-thousand words, then write thirty-thousand words. 50K is an arbitrary number set by the NaNoWriMo organization, and if you don't have time to write that, just write what you do have time to write. The point is the force you to write. ... I am a firm believer that only getting to 20K words and having to stop because you have homework or [RA meetings] or [any kind of social life or vocational responsibilities] is way better than never getting past 0 because you're too scared to attempt it."
